I’ve been asked to write some stories about mom. Oh my. Where to begin? First of all, she was also known to her grandkids as Mamaw Dog since she always had a least one dog on the place. At one time she had 11. She always said that when she got old, she didn’t want to be a stick in the mud like Aunt Ada. She wanted to be fun! Well, she never reached old age, but she was something, fun was only part of it. For her sake, let’s remember the fun parts.
When I was a teenager, I was active in the band – marching band, pep band, concert band. Every Friday night found me at either a Salem High School football or basketball game. Since I was a teenage girl, I had on crush on a lot of guys. My friend Patti and I were always wanting to gain the attention of some cute boy but was to chicken to do it. That’s where mom stepped in. She and dad came to every Friday night game. When mom found out that we wanted to catch some guy’s eye, she would go buy popcorn and begin throwing it at him. Patti and I about died. He would turn around and look. Mom was always straight faced as anything. Patti and I were either cracking up or pretending to be really involved in watching the game.
Speaking of band, mom was intrigued by the sliding trombone. Sometimes when I was practicing my piccolo part at home, mom would “hum” the trombone part and pretend like she was playing along, holding one hand up to her mouth for the mouthpiece and moving her other arm up and down as if she were sliding that trombone! She could be such a hoot!

She was awesome. I think her and Ariel would’ve gotten along so well.
Really? Her and Ariel? I don’t know him very well. He’s quiet and patient.
