Blessings or Thanks?

I was reading in my devotional about a week ago, and I stumbled upon something that I want to share with you. In the Bible, in the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000, most versions say Jesus “gave thanks” for the bread and the meat. In other translations, it says that Jesus BLESSED the bread and fish. Any difference? I think so. To give thanks is to be grateful for what you have, you are thanking God for providing. The Greek word is Eulogesen. That is where we get the word Eulogy. In case you don’t know, a eulogy is given at someone’s funeral to speak well of them. However, In this case, the definition of eulogesen means to consecrate for divine use. Jesus didn’t just give thanks for the bread and fish, he BLESSED it. He consecrated it for divine use; it was supernatural if you will.

The very first blessing in the Bible is in the beginning, Genesis 1:28 “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, be fruitful, and multiply…” when God Blessed what he created with the words “Be fruitful and multiply” he wants it to grow in number. When Jesus BLESSED the bread and fish, He was invoking God’s power to MULTIPLY it. That’s why five loaves and two fish were able to feed so many people. The BLESSING brought MULTIPLICATION.

If it seems as though things in your life are being subtracted or divided, maybe it’s time to invoke a BLESSING (consecrate it for divine use) instead of just giving thanks.
